The implementation of the project Know your Nature started in July 2012. The main objective of the project was to increase public awareness of environmental protection and biodiversity under the Natura 2000 network of areas. Moreover, in the draft a special emphasis was put on the increase in positive attitude towards Natura 2000 areas among local communities living in 5 selected Natura 2000 areas:
- Białowieża Forest,
- Valley of the Middle Noteć River and the Bydgoszcz Channel
- Refuge of bats of Island Beskid,
- The Lesser Poland Gorge of the Vistula,
A series of meetings were held for the inhabitants of these areas, during which reliable information on the Natura 2000 area network was passed, disproving the myths that have grown up around this latest form of nature protection in our country. What is more, concerts of Andrzej Piaseczny, the ambassador of the project, were held in all of these areas.
The Project was also to facilitate social dialogue on Natura 2000 areas and to entourage the recipients of the project to exchange experiences within the Forum for Cooperation for the Natura 2000 network. What is more, Nature Working Groups (Polish: Naturowe Grupy Robocze) have been set up, which purpose is to establish and strengthen the cooperation for the protection of nature within the Natura 2000 network among the representatives of various communities.
The Know your Nature project was funded by the European Union from the funds of the Life + financial instrument and from the funds of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
